It's called the single-legged Romanian Deadlift. It's a great exercise for firming both the butt and the back of the thighs. Also, because this is a single-legged exercise, it really helps strengthen your ankles and other stabilizer muscles throughout your legs. Here's how to do it:

1. Looking straight ahead, stand and balance on one leg, and kick the other leg out slightly behind you.

2. Maintain a very slight bend in the knee throughout this exercise.

3. Now start to bend forward while simultaneously pushing the butt and hips back and keeping a flat (not rounded) back.

4. While bending over and pushing the hips back, kick your other leg out behind you and reach down with your hands towards the toe of your foot that's planted on the ground and try to touch it. You should feel a stretch in the hamstrings as you get to the deepest part where your back is parallel to the floor.

5. Then, focus on squeezing the butt muscle hard while you reverse the movement and bring yourself back to upright (all the while maintaining that flat back)

Alright, that was one rep! Now do 5-10 reps with each leg for 2-3 sets mixing this exercise into one of your normal workouts (or even just try this at home in your living room). At the end of a couple sets, I guarantee you'll be feeling this big-time in your buttocks and the back of your thighs!

I know it may sound a little complicated, and the first time you try this butt exercise, you may really need to concentrate on your balance. But after a couple sessions of practicing these one-legged romanian deadlifts, you'll start to get the hang of them and be able to focus more concentration on keeping the butt tight throughout the range of motion.

To Burn Wii games or not to ? That's the question. The Wii is increasing in popularity, and as such there is a huge demand for games. Even worse, games are expensive, so what happens if you scratch the disc or something? Read on to find out how to burn Wii games that you can use as a backup.

Okay now before you get into this, it's update yourself on the copyright laws in your area. In most places, it's legal to burn Wii games, as long as you own the original, and that the copies are for your personal use only, IE as backups. This is the most common law, but please check it out in your area all the same - there are no Wiis in jail, so you don't really want to end up there right?

First of all, it's not possible to do any copying or anything with the Wii itself, so you'll need to use your computer, and you will need a specific kind of DVD Drive in order to get it working. You need one of the LG-816 series, most notably 8161b, 8162b or 8163b. There is plenty of information about these on Google, so perform a quick search if you need to, and if you are having trouble finding the drives you need to burn Wii games, check Ebay, you can usually get them there.

You need to make an image of the disc before you can burn Wii games, so in addition to the DVD drive, you will need to install some software called .net Framework 2.0, and Raw Dump 2.0

The first thing you need to do to burn Wii games is to put the game you want to burn inside your LG dvd drive. Once it's in, open the Raw Dump file (should have been created after installation) and double click on the rawdump.exe file to get the rawdump program fired up.

Once rawdump opens, you will get a dialog box. Click the button that says Start Dump, and you will soon be ready to burn Wii games. The next part of the process is largely about patience. Due to the size of the files on a DVD, you will need to wait quite a while for the dump to finish. Waiting time will vary due to computer spec and hardware etc, but it can be anywhere between 1 hour and about 5 hours, if you have a slow computer.

Once it's finished, you should see a new file in the rawdump folder, an ISO file, with the same name as whatever game you copied. An ISO file is simply a perfect image of what was previously on a disc. You'll get familiar with these files if you intend to burn Wii games as a habit.

The last two parts of the process are probably the simplest thing you need to do when you burn Wii games. First of all, once the dump finishes, right click on the new file and choose Properties. What you are looking for here is the size of the file. ALL Wii game ISOs are 4.7 Gb in size, which is the same size as a blank DVD, so you can see that the image dump has picked up everything. Anything different from this and you will need to begin again, as it's not possible to burn Wii games if the ISOs are the wrong size!

Once you have the right size, all you need to do to perform the actual burning of the Wii games is to get your preferred burning software, start a new project, and instruct it to burn the ISO image onto a brand new blank DVD. This part can be a little finicky, and if you use low quality discs you'll find you have problems with unreadable games etc.

In order to play the Wii games that you burned, you will either need to get your Wii fitted with a modchip, or use one of several SD card modifications. Tutorials for both of these can easily be found on the net.

Burning Xbox 360 games with ImgBurn is great because you will be able to copy all game features. To begin burning Xbox 360 games on DVD you will require ImgBurn, blank DVD+R Dual Layer disks, a PC with a DVD writer disk drive, the game you want to backup and your console.

Step 1 - Install ImgBurn on your PC

If you do not already have ImgBurn I will show you how to download the software for free so you can begin burning Xbox 360 games with ImgBurn. Step 2 - Backup Xbox 360 game you want to copy

After the process of backing up is finished. Save the backup files on a new folder on your PC. Give the new folder a name you can easily recall because we shall use it in the next step.

Step 4 - Burning Xbox 360 games on DVD

Remove the game you have backed up and insert into the disk drive a blank DVD+R Dual Layer disk. Drag the backup files you saved in the previous step to the burner and begin the burning process. To achieve the same quality as that of the original game, set the write speed to 4x. The entire process can take up to an hour depending on the write speed you set and the file size of the game you are copying.

Once you are done burning Xbox 360 games with ImgBurn it is good to test them on your console to determine whether you were able to copy all game feature. If you followed this guide step by step and used a good quality DVD+R Dual Layer disk then there should not be a problem. Your backup should play as well as the original game.

By mastering how to burn your games onto DVD you will be able to create your own backups and avoid having to buy a new copy every time a game is broken.

Whether you are copying or authoring a DVD, you should have access to the VIDEO_TS folder. If you create your DVD from an authoring software, there should be the option which allows you to export the result on the hard drive in form of a VIDEO_TS folder. If you are copying an existing dual-layer disc, you should drag the whole VIDEO_TS folder of the DVD to your hard drive. In case the DVD is CSS copy protected, you may need to use ripping software such DVD Decrypter to extract the VIDEO_TS.

In the following description I will assume you already have the VIDEO_TS folder stored somewhere on your hard drive.

The tool you will need is called ImgBurn. It is a features rich free software that has been tested to be able to burn dual-layer DVD reliably. Download and install ImgBurn on your computer. Fire up the software when you are ready.

Step 1: From the menu bar choose [Mode > Build]

Step 2: Once in Build mode, click the little [Browse for a folder] icon

Step 3: Navigate to the location where VIDEO_TS, then click [OK]

Step 4: Click the [Calculate Image Size] button on the right bottom

Step 5: Choose the best available break point from the candidates

Step 6: Put your dual-layer DVD-R into your DVD burner and then click the [Build] button

And, voila!

But wait, what if there is no available layer break point candidate in Step 5?

If you are copying an existing dual-layer DVD then it should be unlikely. There must be an available layer break point unless the original DVD was mistakenly authored.

But if you are authoring a DVD then the possible reason is that no smaller logical cells can be found around the layer break point. For DVD-Video the layer break point has to satisfy certain conditions. One of the most important conditions is that the content on the first layer (L0) has to be larger than the content on the second layer (L1). The second condition is that the break point has to be at the boundary of a logical cell. What exactly does that mean? In laymen's term, consider the data are a sequence of chunks of data. The layer break point must be at the boundary of the data chunk. An analogy will be a train with many carriages. If we were to divide the train we have to unlock the hook between the carriages, not cutting a individual carriage into half.

Using our analogy above and it will be clear why there is no available candidate for the layer break point. The reason is you have a carriage that is too long and it spreads over the location where the first condition has to meet. To solve this problem, you will need to go back to your authoring software to create more logical cells around the break point area. A quick fix is to create some chapters around the break point area, usually about half the length of the total video play time. Doing so will shorten the train carriages (the logical cells) around there and a potential candidate will become available.

The problem with PS3 games is that since they are written on Blu Ray, they are actually very difficult to copy for two reasons. The first reason is that you need to have a blu-ray burner in order to copy the discs, and since the blu-ray technology is quite new, this can be a problem. The second hurdle is that Sony have put all sorts of copyright protection on their discs, making them difficult to copy, even if you do have a blu-ray player.

Blu ray is basically a new form of DVD, where a disc can hold a lot more information (up to 50gb) than a standard piece of media. This is important, because it means that only blu-ray compatible players & burners can read the discs, meaning that if you don't have one, you need to get one to copy PS3 games.

The copyright protection that Sony has employed for its PS3 games is in the form of encryption. This is a special language or type of code that only the PS3 and Sony can read. It means that when Sony write the game to their disc, they will actually write it all in special encrypted code. This code cannot be read by anything but the PS3, meaning that if you tried to copy the disc on a PC that doesn't understand it, your PC will just copy a bunch of text and words.

In order to copy and backup PS3 games, you need to be able to create a 1:1 perfect copy of the game, which will include all the encrypted data. This will make your PS3 able to play the games you copy without needing any sort of mod chip to bypass the security protection.

I don't see why you wouldn't purchase this product if you have a laptop with only one CD-R like me. I needed this because my collection of photos/videos of my toddler boy was getting out of hand. I used it to backup ALL of my over 50 gig of data into several DVD's. Not sure about its speed but it took me a while to get them all burned. But hey, I'm just glad that I now have those treasures all backed up! I love my ASUS USB External optical drive. It is extremely portable, and powers itself entirely from the USB ports, an absolute necessity in portable external drives. No need to look for power outlets. It connects to the computer via two USB connections to accomplish this.

It operates well even when shaking, which is often necessary in travels.

I purchased this drive to use with my net book. I needed it to load software from CD's and DVD's. It worked perfectly with my printer software. I also made a bootable disc for my net book. And though I probably won't have many occasions to watch DVD's on my net book, I tried it just to see how it worked, and it worked great!

I bought this DVD drive a couple of days ago. It arrived promptly and I was excited to use it as I had just purchased an Acer Aspire One which does not have a CD/DVD drive. After opening the packaging, taking it out, and reading the instructions, I thought I had made a purchasing mistake. The directions say that the AC adapter must be plugged in for the drive to operate. I plugged just the drive into my computer without the AC adaptor and the drive worked perfectly fine. If you're looking for a DVD external drive that runs right off your USB port, this product is an outstanding choice. It seems sturdy and I have had no issues yet. A good buy despite the higher price.

If you read independent benchmarks, you will find that it's one of the best out there. In my own tests, I found that it does what it should, and does it well. I haven't tested the lightscribe, but I have tested reading DVDs and CDs, and this drive is fast. I've also had no problems burning DVDs and CDs at high speeds. It does not have problems due to riplock even with the included firmware. In other words, you don't need to do anything special to get high performance.

Unless you need Blu-ray and HD DVD (which is often included with Blu-ray drives as a throw in and seems useless, but lets you buy HD DVD closeouts for $3) then this drive should have everything you need.

I like the DVD burner, but the slow speed is the only drawback I have found. I needed to make archival copy's of disc's, and time working with this was a little slow. I would need to be around the desk to much to be ready when the new disc was needed. Once I got the time down for a disc to copy, I could check back in so many minutes and I would be near the completion time.

This is without a doubt the worst piece of junk I have ever purchased as an after market device for a computer. After repeated attempts to install on two computers, nothing. Will not even register on the device manager. So if you buy this be warned...it's trouble. Also, just try to reach the tech support people. What a joke. No responses. And finally when I first reached a person...I was told that a tech would call within an hour. It has now been two days. So, in another attempt to use this piece of junk, I called and did reach support. At that time he said there was nothing to the install. Then proceeded to give me a geek process to do it. Nothing of which is mentioned in the instructions sent with the device. So, it's going back to Amazon...buyer be warned. The entire ASUS bunch is a joke.

This is a great little DVD burner for anyone needing a drive for any functions concerning CDs and DVDs. I bought this one especially for setting up the newest Netbooks, which come without drives due to physical size limitations.

Using external drives and portable usb "thumb" drives is good for many applications and backup situations. But nothing beats having a DVD drive handy for original program or system installations. This unit is very compact, easily slipping into a notebook case along with the computer. Plus, it's quickly recognized by XP and Vista simply by plugging in.

It plays CDs and DVDs very well, and does a fairly quick job burning media too. For all these reasons, I would highly recommend this drive to anyone! I gave it a "five" star rating. On a 100% scale, I would rate it at least 95%.

There is a compatability problem. These do not function properly when using as master/slave with another dvd reader/writer. Fortunately I purchased two and together they worked. Avoid using the packaged software, all it does is create problems even when following the install instructions to remove other software. Had to use an after market uninstaller to insure all the LG packaged software was removed.

I purchased this DVDirect from HSN not Amazon, mine is piano black and shows every fingerprint ugh. This is a quality made video recorder BUT it is really intended for a Sony Camcorder being attached to it by the fire wire connection or by using Sony memory sticks. If you use Sony equipment with this, the DVDirect will record almost anything automatically. If you use another brand of Camcorder or camera, you are restricted to the composite (yellow, red, white) connections and the SD card slot for JPEG photo's and then it's pretty much a manual operation to get the video and JPEG photo's onto DVD disks. That may sound discouraging, but to use all the features properly with a Sony Camcorder reads as very complicated procedures. The manual recording from non-Sony cameras is very simple and even though your using the worst way to copy video (composite cables) the video you get is outstanding. It should be noted that you cannot copy video onto a DVD and then copy JPEG photos onto that same DVD disk as the disk formats itself for one or the other (video or pictures). I cheat on this by using the composite cables that came with my camera (Panasonic FZ28, Canon SX110IS) then put my camera into slide show mode and copy the JPEG's and video from those cameras onto the DVD disk that way. I eliminate the need for the SD card slot. I also can add music to my photo slide shows by hooking up an audio source (IPOD, etc) to the audio inputs on the DVDirect and record audio as it records my JPEG's, works slick. The dirty little secret is that you could use most any camcorder and hook it up to a DVD recorder with composite inputs and do the same thing as this DVDirect will do, so why buy this? Convenience and quality is why, this makes everything simple and the results are great.

If your computer has never had a dvd player installed before, do not buy this. No software is included. You will need a dvd decoder to play a dvd (search for Microsoft dvd decoder to check your machine). If you don't have it, you will have to pay ~$15 to buy it. I had some old software around that installed a decoder, but I am still trying to successfully burn any type of cd.

The directions are inadequate as a previous reviewer indicated. There is no way to get help with the device. Stick with a name brand. This is no bargain.

This is a very solid and capable drive to burn DVDs and CDs. Quick loading response and fast burn times. It is louder than the Sony Blu-ray internal drive I was using, but that one may just have been extraordinarily quiet. The tray also is a bit flimsy, and the loading is noisier than my previous drive. Everyone seems to be a photographer now, especially with digital cameras are falling prices and new models coming out quickly packed with more resolution and features, which makes digital desire for the weak.

The reason why I write about Storage is that my photo library is the building at a constant rate. Here is my advice for the novice photographer.

1st Plenty of memory cards with you, if your shooting a wedding to go to look way out of town, you neverknow when you have time to download photos.

Last week I finally tested the device. It works just as expected. Everything I needed was to plug the USB into my netbook and the drive was immediately recognized. I used the device to burn a DVD of system recovery of my netbook. The only disadvantage that I found was that it took so long to burn the media. I have had this drive for a little over a month now. I have burned over 40 DVD's and 20 CD's. I have only had a couple projects that failed. Both on lower quality Memorex discs. Never while using Verbatum discs. It is faster than my internal Super Drive on my 1 year old Gateway laptop. The internal drive had tons of trouble with DL DVD's and regular problems with any other type of media, were the LG just seems to burn through them with no trouble. (As long as quality media is used). DVD's burned on my internal drive would not allways play on my DVD player, or would pixalize regularly from poor burning. With the LG I have not had any trouble with that at all. I am VERY happy with the quality of this drive. For the price, you can't beat it. It also does a good job on Lightscrbe discs. Very good contrast compared to my internal drive. As a side note, I did not use the supplied software. I use Roxio Creator 2009 for burning, and Sure Thing for labeling. I find supplied software lacking in all cases, and would rather spend a few bucks on software I like.

I am on my 2nd ASUS netbook (I gave my first one to one of my sons) and I wanted this drive for 2 things:

* To load programs - Netbooks are now powerful enough to run many programs including photo and video editing software. It does not run as fast as on a standard notebook PC but since I use my netbook as a storage device for my photos when I am in the field it is nice to have the editing software loaded just in case.

* To watch DVDs - I am often on long flights and if I am in coach I don't always have the ability to watch the movies that I like. With this drive (and the proper software) I can watch any DVD. Many airports rent DVDs and of course there is Netflix.

I am knocking off a star for construction quality. The plastic silver button that opens the DVD/CD holder fell off on the first day that I had it. It popped back on, fell off again and I then added a little super-glue and it hasn't come off since.

I am very pleased with this product. It is affordable, portable and it does not reduce the battery by much but I would have paid more if it was better built.

I have an older PC with a DVD ROM drive only. Upgrade to an internal DVD RW drive's is a more expensive solution and the installation would be more cumbersome, so I choose the USB route. Fortunately, I had already installed a USB2.0/firewire card for connecting to my digital cameras and ipods, so USB connectivity is not a problem. However, I had to connect both USB cable to make this work properly. Bummer! You need one for the I/O and the other for power. Windows XP auto-detected the device and loaded the driver automatically so that was easy. You may need to connect everything up before you power-up and boot your PC for auto-detect to work properly. You can see the drive icon for the new DVD drive in My_Computer from Windows Explorer. The stand can only mount the drive in one direction not both (for left sided installation versus right sided installation), so for my setup, I wanted the DVD drive to be on the left of my desktop therefore I cannot used the stand. ASUS pay attention, make it universal for both left and right. I just laid it flat on the desktop next to my PC.
I would definitely recommend this as an inexpensive upgrade for an older low end or mid-range PC (4-5 years old). Good value and good buy.

It does the job and works well. But it does annoy me that after it's done burning a CD, the computer no longer recognizes it. I have to unplug the usb cord and plug it back in. It's not the biggest deal but it does get obnoxious when I'm burning several discs in a row. I don't think it's something with my computer because I don't think my old burner had that problem.

I'm running Mac OS X Leopard and have the latest version. Maybe this problem would be non-existent if I had Snow Leopard, but I don't know. Just thought I'd give a heads-up for anyone wanting to buy it. And perhaps I could get a driver update from Samsung, but I haven't been able to find it or relevant troubleshooting tips.

I bought this because another reviewer stated it was compatible with his Mac. The CD burner in my iMac got tired out and stopped working and I didn't see much out there for a Mac. Well, this does work and I am burning CDs again. It isn't perfect - usually when I am done burning I have to drag the CD icon to eject it, and the DVD piece of it isn't workking at all, but I mostly wanted it for the CDs and it is doing yeoman's work there. I suspect the DVD piece would work if I cared enough to get software for it. But as it is, it works for me.

The Samsung SE-084B works great, compact and sturdy. I have the Acer Aspire One Netbook and it immediately recognized the burner. I found that it only worked when I used one of the plugs. When I used both plugs CD programs would not load, so I only use one plug and I have no problems. Its great and convenient. Good design.

everything about the drive works fine w/o any issues, on both windows 7 and XP.

My only gripe is the button... basically you will naturally push down on the top front and then press the button.
when this occurs you press down on the case and this stops the tray from opening. not a deal breaker just a gripe.

I just bought a second Macbook Air and did not the external Apple drive that I bought with this first one because it would not work connected to a USB hub. This drive from Sony works great for my office setup. I have all USB devices hooked up to a hub and then connected to the ONE USB port on the Macbook Air. Only draw back is that this drive needs external power, but I don't travel with it so I don't care.

I bought 3 Acer Aspire One computers as Christmas presents this year and needed at least 1 external drive to share between them. 2 of the computers had Windows 7 Starter as the operating system ansd the other had Windows XP. The drive was basicly plug & play on the XP computer, but would not work on the Windows 7 computers at all. The disc that came with the drive had old drivers on it that didn't include Windows 7. The instruction sheet was of no use at all. There was no manufacturers name or model number on the drive, nothing I could reference any kind of a search with. I downloaded several different codec's but none would operate the drive. Fianally I called Acer for help and found out that they hadden't released any drivers for the Aspire One with Windows 7 Starter. The reason, "Windows 7 is too new, and to keep checking back with them."
The seller of the drive wasn't aware that it was not compatable with Windows 7. I gave it 3 stars overall rating because it did work fine with XP computer. I only gave it 1 star for ease of use and ease of installation because I had so much trouble with it trying to get it to work. I don't think the vender screened the product for compatibility with Windows 7.

Setting up this external drive is almost too easy. It took me longer to unpack the drive than to set it up. Just plug in the USB cable and you are done. Operation has been flawless so far and I have already used the drive a lot just to test it out.

I have the Sony DRX840U External Drive sitting right next to my 500 GB LaCie External Hard Drive. My LaCie Hard Drive is a work of art, and makes virtually no noise at all, but when the Sony DVD drive fires up it makes quite a bit of noise. So much noise that if I have both of my computers running all I can hear is this external DVD Drive. Also if I have my TV on I have to turn up the volume to compensate for the noisy drive.

Now, don't get me wrong, the drive works just as well as you would expect for a Sony drive, and the noise from the drive can be reduced if you have a set of USB headphones handy. The only real problem I have had with the drive is when it is set up standing on end rather than layiing flat on a hard surface. I have had the DVD disc that I inserted into the drive fall out when the drive door closes and the disc rolls across the floor. You just have to be careful when inserting a disc in the drive. I would recommend this drive as a smart buy.

I was impressed with the specs of this burner: usb connection, slim and compact chassis, slot load, lightscribe, etc. Unfortunately, the installation CD that came with the unit was warped and I was unable to install the software. I believe it's the result of how the CD was placed in the box. Amazon sent me a second unit; no luck, same CD problem.

Also, even though "lightscribe" was advertised, I couldn't see the lightscribe software listed anywhere on the intall CD's top face?!...

Good hardware with error correction. Will read beat up DVD's. Easy installation. It works.

But.

USB cable is too short, way too short and the supplied "free" software is unusable on my laptop. It is weird and uncontrollable and very large for some reason and a waste of time to install. It must be designed for desktop game machines or for DVD pirates. I just want to watch my Netflix movies.

I bought this on the basis of the other positive reviews. What a great & fast burner it is; it puts my internal drive to shame!

As others, I found that I usually only need to connect 1 USB connector, but occasionally needed both cables connected, which is a problem on my laptop. I have 3 USB connections on my PC, but they're farther apart than the supplied Y-cable (Asus, are you listening?). No problem though, I just ordered 2 3-ft USB extension cables for [...] total from [...]. That totally solved the problem.

The drive has performed flawlessly- hey neat looking little guy, too. The supplied Cyberlink software also works fine. But be careful if your drives are configured using DLA for drag & drop file transfers (which is really great, but conflicts with Cyberlink & some other burner programs). You would need to uninstall DLA before installing Cyberlink.

I'm on a MacBook running Leopard. I plugged it into my laptop and BOOM it works. Didn't have to do anything at all. I had no problems burning CDs and DVDs. It works with only one of two USB plugged in. It's quicker with both plugged in, though. The CD included was of absolutely no use to me whatsoever; only Windoze software.

The trouble came for me when I decided to use the Lightscribe technology. I reallyreallyreally wanted this to work, because I like nice labels but hate fussing with paper labels. I could not get any labeling programs to recognize the Lightscribe capabilities of the drive. It just kept giving me the error, No Lightscribe Drive Detected. I Googled the CRAP out of this problem, looked on official Lightscribe website, Samsung website, Apple Support, and several different Mac Forums. I tried all these labeling programs: Simple Labeler for Mac from the official Lightscribe website, Disk Cover LE in Toast, DiscLabel in SmileForMyMac. Nothing would work. I guess I'll just keep using ugly black sharpie marker for my burned DVDs, which make my OCD-addled brain want to puke.

I tried not to rate this product too harshly because I read through every review and no one else cared about using Lightscribe. But it did factor in highly to my satisfaction level because I wanted Lightscribe to work so badly. If you don't care about using Lightscribe, by all means, snap this baby right up. Lightscribe trouble is my only complaint.

I was seeking a CD/DVD drive for use with my Asus Eee PC. The sole advantage to THIS device is that it doesn't require an external power supply.
Out of the box the device appeared to be DOA with three different computers.
It wasn't until I tried a different cable that it came to life.
I was able to use it to read the included software CD. Once it appeared that I had the software installed and rebooted the computer Windows (XP) did not "see" the drive. I removed all the software and tried again to install it. Same problem. And strangely the supplied cable worked later. But that didn't solve the failure to operate.
I tried so many things to get it to work that I lost track of what finally surprised me and made it work.
The Nero 8 Essentials software is the worst Nero product I have seen to date. Granted it's a "limited function" product, but would upgrading it to the full version make it better? I am hard pressed to think so.
The drive is slow (I had forgotten how slow 8X could be.)
It would have been a nice touch to have included a power jack so that external power could be used if it was available.
And since the target purpose was portability a small cast would have been nice too. I am not a "newbie" with computer software and hardware.
It will do the job for which I bought it, playing CD's or DVD movies. But I doubt that I would use it for a large amount of recording CD's OR DVD's
By the way, support via the Samsung web site is pretty slim too.

I bought this product to go with my very slick Asus Eee PC. This product is advertised as plug and play for DVDs. For many years I have been used to the true plug and play nature of Macs and their accessories. "It just works". After at least an hour of frustration with this drive, I remember the 'good ol' days' of pulling my hair out with PC frustrations. I plugged in the drive and it powered up. Pressing the eject button opens the tray with a cheap pop. I put in the enclosed CD and went through a very extensive, non-intuitive process of trying to update the firmware. Once this was done, I tried to run the enclosed Nero software. I continually got an error message that it unexpectedly quit on installation. I could not get the Nero software, necessary for all functions, to load as others have described. Using the drive would require spending more money on another program to use it, such as Roxio. Then I found out the drive would not even play a DVD. This would require paying 15 to 30 dollars for a codec to enable Windows Media Player to run a DVD. You would think after buying a brand new computer, a copy of the latest Windows AND a new optical drive that someone would include the lousy codec! Funny how I can just plug in a new drive to my Mac and be watching a movie 5 seconds later! Well this optical drive is going right back in the box to Amazon. The users manual is worthless with nothing but a few useless diagrams about plugging in the cord. There is not a customer service phone number anywhere within site. Save the hassle and skip buying this product.

I'll admit that I'm not particularly computer savvy to begin with so please take that into consideration when reading this review. I purchased a Dell netbook(XP)and wanted to install several software programs so that I could replace my old desktop completely with the new computer.

The drive was very lightweight and easy to install. I had absolutely no problems downloading the first few cd's and was feeling very confident about this product. Then suddenly disaster struck. I put a new cd into the drive (Microsoft Office 2003) and it wouldn't turn at all (no green light and nothing happened)or it would start to spin then stop. At first I thought that maybe something was wrong with the cd so I ran it on my old desktop and it ran just fine.

I tried it again after unplugging the USB cords and plugging them back in then, depending on the mood of the moment, it either wouldn't spin at all, would spin for a bit, or would get to a point in the installation process where a message would come up and state that it couldn't read specific lines on the cd. I then tried a DVD and absolutely nothing happened again. At this point I was beyond frustrated and decided to give up before I threw it against the wall. I'm going to try another brand and hope that I don't have the same problem.

On a side note this is the first time I have ever returned anything with Amazon and I have to say that so far I am very impressed with the ease of the return process on an item.

Right out of the box the unit worked with no problem. I used both USB ports on my computer and was able to do what my older HP notenook could not do. I have never been able to write to this drive in my laptop and have always had to use my PC. The last trip we took I needed to copy an item and could not do it. Went to Amazon and this little drive fit the bill perfectly. I also down loaded Nero which was a better burning program than I had. Overall I am very satisfied with the drive.

I bought this to go with my laptop, which I leave the docking station with DVD-RW drive at work. I use this at home or on trips occasionally. Although it has 2 USB plugs to assure that it gets enough power from the PC, I didn't have any problem reading the disks with just 1 plug used. For laptops without a lot of USB ports, you may consider using a cheap USB charger for the 2nd USB plug so the drive can still get enough power it needs. I haven't burned any disk using this, so I can't comment on its burning capability.

I am very satisfied withe the DR420. It is simple to use the One Touch Recording function. Recording quality is very good. And the upscale playback feature works very well. It is not Bluetooth but serves my purpose very well. I would recommend this unit to anyone wanting to record programs video programs.

The DVD drive on my wife's laptop died. She is a graduate student who is busy finishing up her degree program and desperately needs a DVD drive to input the materials from which she is creating papers and projects. So, I quickly went to Amazon and searched for external drives available with Prime shipping. I found the ASUS SDRW-08D1S-U and with all the positive reviews it sure seemed to fit the bill. It arrived right on time today (ahead of time actually, even with Prime I wasn't expecting it until tomorrow). So much for the good news.

I went to install this device and found my USB hub won't connect to her laptop correctly. Since the 08D1S-U wants two USB ports, I really wanted to use the hub, but time for plan B. I plugged the drive directly into the two USB ports on the laptop. Now the drive responds correctly to the OPEN button, so I load the disk... but it still isn't recognized by the laptop so I can't try to install from the accompanying disk, presumably including drivers. Well, fortunately I have another computer in the house, so I took the disk and a USB memory stick to the other computer and transferred the install disk's contents to the USB memory stick... brought that over to the laptop needing the DVD drive, and tried to install the software. It seemed to install, and the device driver now sees the ASUS DVD drive, but I STILL can't see the device in the file manager and inserting a CD into the drive does not do anything.

I then went to the ASUS site to download fresh drivers, only to find that when I selected the 08D1S-U, there are ZERO operating systems available from which to choose, and zero files available for download.

Sure sounds like there is a problem here.

I've searched the web and see a few comments about this drive being bad news on XP, but I don't see anything definitive, and certainly no solutions to be found. I have written ASUS support, but they suggest not to expect a response in less than 48 hours. In the meantime, I wasted a couple of hours on the laptop that my wife the student could have been using to actually work on her assignments. Instead I was involved in the futile exercise of getting this device to work.
